It’s been reported that as much as a dump truck’s worth of plastic litter seeps into our oceans every minute, and conservationists estimate that, by 2025, there could be more plastic in our oceans than there are fish. At this point, there’s no denying that marine plastic waste is a growing concern for our planet.

Hoping to do its part in the fight for our oceans, Adidas is asking runners around the world to participate in ‘Run for the Oceans’ from June 8 to June 16. For the next week, the brand has committed to donating one dollar for every kilometer you run to Parley for the Oceans, an organization that addresses major threats faced by our oceans. According to the brand’s Vice President of Global Purpose, Nicole Vollebregt, the event is “aimed to educate and empower future generations to get out and make a real difference.”

Four years ago, Adidas introduced its first-ever shoe made of recycled plastic in collaboration with Parley, which was tasked with creating the thread out of plastic waste and old fishing nets from the sea. Approximately 17 plastic bottles — combined with half an ounce of recycled netting — were used to create the final shoe. Alberto Uncini Manganelli, general manager of running at Adidas, says the athleticwear company has now made the commitment to use 100 percent recycled polyester by 2024.

Just last year, Adidas raised 1 million dollars for Parley for the Oceans. This money gave 100,000 young people and families affected by coastal plastic pollution the opportunity to participate in the Parley Ocean School Program. Not only that, but the two companies supervised the manufacturing of six million shoes made purely of recycled ocean plastic. That’s thousands of plastic bottles!

This year, Adidas is setting its sights even higher. Both Adidas and Parley are on a mission to make 11 million shoes from ocean plastic litter. Their hope for 2019 is to motivate even more runners across the world to join ‘Run for The Oceans’. Adidas’ goal is to raise 1.5 million dollars in total, with one dollar for every kilometer ran to be donated to the Digital Parley Ocean School. This money will then be used to create an online curriculum for young people to learn more about ocean conservation.

Adidas and Parley hope this innovative program will unite youth worldwide and encourage them to share their ideas, come up with new practical solutions, and connect at future events. “Youth are our biggest hope since they are driven by the strongest of all motivations: their own survival,” says Cyrill Gutsch, founder and CEO of Parley for the Oceans. “We are more than grateful for the generous support of our founding partner, Adidas. It allows us to grow the movement into a superstorm of change.”

Passionate about being part of the solution? Join in on the movement by signing up for ‘Run for the Oceans 2019′  and tracking your run with the Runtastic Jog & Running app. If you’re someone who cares about the environment — or even if you simply need a reason to go outside and be active — this is a great way to make a difference in your community while taking positive steps towards improving your overall health.
